The power of purple!

Purple is my favorite color. Next to glitter, it’s the second art supply that makes me ooo and ahhh. If i could, I’d paint my car purple and put purple streaks in my hair – of course accented with translucent micro glitter. I’ve always been big on bright contrasting colors, I think because I grew up in a home where everything was different shades of brown and beige.

Yesterday Maya and I were at Home Depot when she spotted the most rad shade of purple. It was a shade I’d never seen before, it was from the Disney collection.

“Let’s get a gallon and paint something, Mommy!”

That’s my girl!

We took our gallon home, changed into our paint clothes and made a bee line for the two patio Adirondack chairs in our Arizona room. We were so excited, we didn’t even dust off the dead bugs or cobwebs that were in the grooves (our AZ room has been vacant since spring, it’s 115 over here in the summer!). We put on the soundtrack to “Bend it Like Beckham” and also some Rufus Wainwright (Maya’s fave) and just painted right over those dead suckers! Yah it was kinda gross, but our enthusiasm overpowered the yuckiness.

The chairs looked soooo good in purple, that we pulled out a can of red and painted our wood sitting swing too. I sent Maya in the house after that because I was scared of that paint stink combined with her age and body weight would not mix well. All I needed was for her to pass out from the fumes and we’d end up at the emergency room; “My mommy made me paint the Arizona room…and I got sick…”

Before we went to bed, we decided we would paint the Az room borders and beams the next day (today). So I came home from work and dove in. But Maya came down sick with a cold, so I had to do it all myself. I HATE any kind of exercise and this was exercise by default!

The last time I did this much painting was when my mom hurt my feelings at a family function, and instead of standing up for myself, I came straight home and painted (not flat, but a faux finish) the whole entire entry way marigold yellow. I must have been really mad because I remember hearing the opening music to Willy Wonka playing on the TV, and I finished the last square inch right before Charlie gave back the Everlasting Gobstopper. I think I was on Metabolife then, but it’s still impressive timing.

With the Arizona room AND the living room being purple, now we have too much purple in our la casa loca! I’m worried I’ll get tired of it and that would be the worst thing in the world for me because I love it so much. So (sigh), now I have to repaint the entire living room another freakin’ color. And believe it or not, I’m thinking of beige. Note to self: Don’t let Maya go down the paint aisle ever again!

Love & light,
