New craft books

The crafting industry rings up more than $30billion a year. That means most of us – at one point or another – have picked up a glue stick, a pair of scissors or a needle and thread. If you haven’t – it’s time you did!

Don’t know where to start? The answer is as close as your local bookstore, where dozens of new craft titles have been released.

I’ve scoured all of them and these are some of my favorites for this season. Pick a topic that interests you, buy the book, and then invite a friend over to share in the fun.

Material World: Home Decor Project for the Fabric Obsessed, by Cat Wei (Quarry Books, 160 pages, $19.99 paperback): You don’t have to be a master seamstress to play with fabric. These ideas are all about using material accents to add texture to any room or living space.

Bead Simple: 150 Designs for Necklaces, Earrings, Bracelets, Embellishments and More, by Susan Beal (Taunton Press, 220 pages, $19.95 paperback): Innovative (and easy) beaded designs that range from classy to campy. Includes projects from dozens of national designers, including a multimedia charm collage by yours truly! (I’ll post the project separately)

Art Journals & Creative Healing: Restoring the Spirit Through Self-Expression, by Sharon Soneff (Quarry Books, 128 pages, $24.99 paperback): If you want to use art as inspiration or for healing, this is the one for you. It offers an array of introspective diary pages by various artists, plus the personal story of how the piece came to be.

Downtown DIY Sewing: 14 Easy Designs for City Girls With Style, by Alice Chadwick (Watson-Guptill, 63pages, $12.95 paperback): Quick and clean design recipes for reconstructing clothing into big-city jewelry, accessories and more. Includes three patterns as well.

The Complete Book of Retro Crafts: Collecting, Displaying & Making Crafts for the Past, by Suzie Millions (Lark Books, 176 pages, $14.95 paperback): Fun, colorful, kitschy and downright silly – but still 100 percent cool. Detailed directions for making vintage home accessories that look like they came straight from your hip grandma’s house.

99 Ways to Cut, Sew, Tie & Rock Your Scarf, by Faith Blakeney, Justina Blakeney and Ellen Schultz (Potter Craft, 208 pages, $19.95 hardback): Scarves are the new T-shirts! Cut them up, and turn them into something else. This clever little page turner shows every-which-way they can be morphed into runway-worthy blouses, bags and more.
