Seven days. My product line at Michaels!

Psssttt…Here are some top secret “inside photos” – sneakily snapped from within the Duncan crafty compound. My friend hid inside a box to take these pics (right Lauren?). Here is the crew sorting and packing hundreds of product packages for shipment all across the land!!!

The Crafty Chica product line hits store shelves next week, August 1st, 2008 – one week from today! Here’s the list of Michaels store locations.

This line won the Innovations Best in Show Award for General Crafts last week at CHA, so I feel confident we are on the right track.

*Deep breath*.

I’ve recieved many questions from people about all of this, and for anyone new, this did not fall in my lap out of the sky. There is a long HERstory behind it, which I wrote about in my post called “Squeezing a Dollar Out of a Dime.”

Basically, I had been making contemporary Latin-themed art for a living with my husband since 1990. I started at The Arizona Republic in 95, as a tear sheet clerk, shredding papers in the basement. I worked my way into the Features newsroom, finished my BA at night school and was offered a craft column in 2000. I started Crafty Chica on my own time to share my idea-driven crafty ideas with the masses. I tried very hard to come up with innovative ideas. I love bright colors, lots of glitter and high gloss varnish.

The column got picked up for syndication by Gannett Service and it still runs weekly in at least 50 papers across the country. In addition, the popularity of the site grew faster than I could keep up with. A book deal followed, as did national TV work and so forth. I worked on my site in the middle of the night to keep up with the demand. My site now receives close to 50,000 unique visitors a month and has been featured on everywehre fromm NPR’s Weekend Edition to the Wall Street Journal to the Los Angeles Times.

This site is my way of volunteering on a global level – I love to inspire others to get crafty! I recieve emails daily from crafty chicas from Japan, China, India, Mexico, Brazil and of course, most from America! I do my best to write them all back. Many are trying to start their own crafty brand, and I offer them adivce, others just write to tell me they never crafted before they visited my site. Some write to share memories of craftiness in their family.

Most of my projects are what I call “gateway crafts” – easy projects to lure in new people to give it try! My goal is to present easy, affordable ideas that you can look at and say, “I want to make that today!” Once you use zig zag scissors, it is hard to stop!

Last year, the folks at Duncan Enterprises let me know they had been following what I was doing. They told me I built a fabulous brand (I had no idea I was building a “brand”) and asked if I thought I could transfer the spirit of my site into a tangible product line for consumers. They offfered me a dream job to make a go of it. I’ve spent the last year working with my husband (one of the illustrators of the line), along with the team at Duncan to make a fun mix-and-match selection that celebrates all things fun and shiny!

We presented the line to craft stores, chains and indies, and Michaels is the first to step up on the Crafty Chica band wagon! The line will debut in 141 stores and will be on sale from August-October.

If it sells good (it will!!!), well…even bigger and better news will follow!
