This is how I write.

(This is the reminder sheet that I keep by my desk while I write fiction. It helps me stay focused. It also changes from week to week depending on what part of the story I’m working on.)

I’m working 8-10 hours a day writing my next novel, MISS SCARLET’S SCHOOL OF PATTERNLESS SEWING, and it is flowing right along. My original plan was to finish it for NaNoWriMo, but now that I’ve written and sold one novel already (my previous NaNo project), I know more how it all works. For one thing, I don’t want to rush too much, at least not 80,000 words in 30-days kind of rush.

Here is how I’m writing this book, so far so good. My deadline is in a little over a month. Gulp!

1. I wrote a one-paragraph plot.

2. I nailed down my characters, their storylines, backstories, conducted research, etc.

3. I fleshed out a chapter-by-chapter outline.

4. Write the first draft. I’m not editing as I go. This is a CRUCIAL mistake a lot of people make. I almost made it while working on this book early on. Let’s say you write a chapter, and then you go back and edit it three times, rewrite it, add stronger dialogue, etc. Halfway through the book, your story may deviate from your original plan, and you’ll have to go back and rework those early chapters. Think of all that wasted time! Therefore, just plow through and finish the initial draft.

5. Keeping a daily goal. I do my best to get in between 1,500-3,000 words each night. That way if I take a day off, Ill still be on track.

6. Keeping a chapter journal. While I’m writing, I’ll think of scenes or details I need to add to previous chapters. Instead of scrolling back, I have a little notebook with chapter numbers. I jot down what I need to change when it comes time to edit.

7. Edit/trim/revise. Once I’m done writing the first draft, I’ll jump up and down in the middle of the street and scream out in joy. And then I’ll hop back in my chair and go back to page one and edit!

Love & light,
