Crafty Chica Fabric Collage Bags

TAGS
These fabric collage bags are fresh out of my studio. I eventually decided to give my sewing machine a much-needed rest!

I make these bags from all scrap fabrics, trims and even old shirts. They come together to make a statement of color and culture. Working on a tutorial soon!

Here are the basics. Make a tote, here is a video I found. But before you sew the front pamel, sew on your t-shirt, prnted designs, trims. Then construct the bag.

I printed one of Patrick’s paintings on fabric and trimmed it with fluffy ribbon.

How to sew a fabric collage bag:

Materials Needed:
– Fabric (cotton, canvas, or other sturdy fabric)
– Thread (matching or contrasting color)
– Sewing machine
– Scissors
– Measuring tape or ruler
– Pins
– Iron and ironing board
– Optional: interfacing for added sturdiness

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Cut the Fabric:
– Cut two rectangles of fabric for the body of the tote bag. Common dimensions are 16 inches wide by 18 inches tall.
– Cut two strips of fabric for the handles. Each strip should be about 4 inches wide and 22 inches long.
– Optional: If using interfacing, cut it to match the fabric rectangles and handle strips.

Prepare the Handles:
– Fold each fabric strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and press with an iron.
– Sew along the long edge of the strip with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
– Turn the fabric right side out and press again. Optionally, topstitch along both long edges for added strength and decoration.

Assemble the Bag Body:*
– Place the two body pieces of fabric right sides together.
– Pin the sides and bottom edges together.
– Sew along the sides and bottom edges with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving the top edge open.
– To create a flat bottom for the bag, make a gusset:
– At the bottom corners, pull the fabric apart so the side seam aligns with the bottom seam, forming a triangle.
– Measure 2 inches from the point of the triangle and draw a line perpendicular to the seam.
– Sew along this line and trim the excess fabric.

Attach the Handles:
– Turn the bag right side out.
– Position the handles on the top edge of the bag, spacing them evenly (about 4 inches from each side seam).
– Pin the handles in place, ensuring they are not twisted.
– Sew the handles to the top edge of the bag, using a reinforced stitch or a box stitch for added strength.

Finish the Top Edge:
– Fold the top edge of the bag down 1/4 inch to the wrong side and press.
– Fold it down again 1 inch to encase the raw edge and press again.
– Sew around the folded edge close to the fold to secure it in place.

Final Touches:
– Press the entire bag to give it a finished look.
– Optionally, you can add a pocket or embellishments to the outside of the bag for personalization.
