Day of the Dead Backpack

The time has arrived! As you read this, there is a good chance I’ll be hiking at Glen Canyon National Park as part of the American Latino Heritage Fund expedition program! Even though I’ve been super excited for this amazing opportunity, I’ve been equally paranoid. I’ve never been hiking, I’m chubby and am a klutz. These are challenges I’m ready to face and overcome. Yes, I hope to take pictures too!

In the meantime – I’ve been crafting. I took the things we got from REI and have been personalizing them. It helps calm my nerves! This is my daypack in my favorite shade of purple. I used one of my New Crafty Chica iron-ons (coming to select Michaels stores in september!), I laos added some of my glittered skulls too! They are both taken from my paintings and drawings!

The fabric isn’t cotton, I was a bit worried if the transfer would adhere – but it did!

First you set the iron on high and work on an ironing board.

Place a pressing cloth on top and press down on the iron for about 6-seconds at a time, make sure to get the edges. Don’t drag it or it will smear.

Pick at one corner of the transfer, you may need to hold a corner down with your finger, then carefully peel away the plastic.

Here are the glittered skulls. Those of you who follow my Instagram may have seen my sketches from about six months ago. I didn’t say what they were going to be used for, lol!

And here is the end result! I love it!
