Painted wine glasses DIY
This is such a fun project for weddings, invite the bridesmaid to help or make them for your house!
Supplies:
- Clear wine glasses
- Rubbing alcohol and cotton balls (for cleaning)
- Acrylic enamel/multi-surface paint or glass paint
- Fine-tip paintbrushes
- Foam brush (optional)
- Painter’s tape or stencils (optional)
- Palette or disposable plate
- Paper towels
- Oven (for curing, only if required by paint instructions)
Directions:
Directions:
Clean the glasses
Wash the wine glasses with warm, soapy water and dry them completely.
Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove oils and fingerprints. Let dry.
Plan your design
Sketch your idea on paper first or use stencils for precision.
If using tape or stencils, position them on the glass before painting.
Apply the paint
Use a fine-tip brush for details and a foam brush for larger sections.
Base coat with white, let dry and then add the background color and then the accents and highlights. Apply light coats to avoid streaks. Let each layer dry before adding another.
If using multiple colors, wait for one section to dry before painting adjacent areas.
Let it dry
Allow the painted glass to dry for at least one hour before handling.
Cure the paint
Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions. Most require:
Air drying: Let the glass cure for 21 days.
Oven curing: Place the glasses in a cool oven, set to 350°F (175°C), and bake for 30 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the glasses cool completely before removing them.
Seal the design (optional)
Some paints are dishwasher-safe after curing, but handwashing is recommended for longevity.
If desired, apply a clear sealant made for glass painting.
Care instructions
Handwash gently with mild soap.
Avoid scrubbing directly on painted areas.
Do not microwave painted glasses.
Now your custom-painted wine glasses are ready to use or gift!
Here I am with Cecily at the wedding. Isn’t she so pretty? She is a photography teacher at Central High School, I’m super proud of her!
