Apple vs. Spotify: The Stream Music Battle

Apple Music vs. Spotify

by Will Medina, special for CraftyChica.com

This month I wanted to do something different and give you my take on the Apple Music vs. Spotify debate that everyone has been talking about. Basically “streaming” jis Internet radio. The funny thing is that I use both of these streaming services and find that each bring their own different spin to satisfy any music listener.

Here are my thoughts and some suggestions for both platforms.

Price:

When it comes to price some might not want to pay for a streaming service. Unlike Spotify, Apple Music has a month fee of $9.99 per month and $14.99 per month (family pack) while Spotify is free with the basic but you can purchase the premium version for the same price of $9.99 per month.

My take: Do what fits your budget. Keep in mind Apple Music does give you a three-month free trial to test it out.

Social Aspect:

Spotify’s social integration is somewhat limited because only really follow artists, friends and companies who have made specific accounts, allowing you access to their shared playlists. Apple Music has something called Connect which has artists share exclusive material such as photos, videos, and behind-the-scenes content, all of which fans can interact with by commenting or sharing.

My take: I am a sucker for exclusive materials from my favorite artists and I think Apple Music has Spotify beat on this one.

Radio:

Apple Music’s various radio stations and playlists were a bit underwhelming because some of options are very basic. But once I gave one of these stations a good listen it has actually a great mix of new artists.

Recommended radio/playlists: Beats 1, Indie, and Urbano Latino.

Spotify’s playlists have had me hooked since getting the service a few months ago. I have been heavily invested in my Discover Weekly playlist and different moods playlists for a while now that I tend to listen to anything else. The Discover Weekly playlist seems to perfect every Monday that the playlist comes out that I always find a few great new artists that I fall in love with.

Recommended radio/playlists: Discover Weekly, United States Viral 50, and Mood (Kathy likes Acoustic Covers!).

My take: Tie!

Discover Weekly

Verdict:

I think that it’s a bit early to give my full verdict on this battle of streaming music platforms but I know that everyone has their preference. My advice is to play around with both and see which one really works for you. Some days I am really into my Spotify playlist and some other days all I want to do is listen to my Apply Music albums. There is no one right choice is this battle and I think that whatever choice you make it’s going be a winner. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and be introduced to new artists and new music platforms. The best feeling in the world (at least for me) is finding that new music obsession and I hope you find that new obsession soon!
