DIY Artful Lighting + Other Easy Home Projects for Spring

Artful lighting – yes, yes, yes! You can do this. Especially if you are itching to do a little makeover in your house. Crafting up a cool light fixture is an easy and low-cost way. You can go simple or a lil extra like me.

Google Trends data shows interest in the modern DIY movement first started rising in 2008, and it continues to rise each year. When it comes to revamping your home or redecorating it, many people find themselves feeling intimidated by such a massive DIY undertaking. Giving your home a makeover requires a lot of hard work, time, money, and patience.

While many home projects really do require all of the above, there are actually some pretty easy DIY home projects.

If you want to ease into the DIY world, then start with a micro project such as replacing your light switch covers. My Suburban Life points out that during major home renovations, homeowners often forget to upgrade their light switch covers. Yet replacing these fixtures is as simple as it is inexpensive. You can choose a wooden cover or a metal cover, but it’s a lot more fun to paint an interesting design on it. Plus, it’s a fun, kid-friendly DIY project.

You’ll need a plastic or metal light switch cover, painters tape, primer, paint brushes, and painters tape.

  1. Apply a coating of primer to the switch plates and allow them to dry.
  2. Outline a geometric pattern, stripes, or any other pattern you’d like on the covers.
  3. If necessary, apply painters tape.
  4. Paint away!

It really is that simple! You can also use glitter, rhinestones, or spray paint. ( head to BuzzFeed for more inspiration). Once you’re done, simply use a screwdriver to apply your new light switch covers to the wall!

Fabric & Yarn Lamp Shade

I used up a yarn and fabric scraps to make this lampshade. It’s totally over-the-top, but it’s all ME. You can use this technique but alter it to fit your personality. Maybe all the same color but different textures. Video link.

  1. I just love the yarn lampshade you made. For me, the large bold swirls SCREAM Van Goghs painting The Starry Night. Im going to give it a try and I hope it turns out at least half as beautiful as yours. Thanks for the idea.
