Father’s Day Appreciation Plates

Father’s Day crafts can be tough – how do we find the perfect gift for someone who seemingly has everything?

These Father’s Day Appreciation Plates get right to the point of why we love our dads – or stand-in dads. The idea is to write out all the things you love about your dad or things you are grateful for.

Hopefully, it will be a plate he will want to use all the time. I used a Sharpie marker on a white ceramic plate, which can be baked so it will stay semi-permanently.

There are so many ideas for this project!

Love letter to dad

Have each kid or maybe just you, write DAD at the top and then write your memories or phrases all around the edge of the plate. It can have jokes your dad tells, common quips, highlights of his achievements, you get the idea!

Make it a family affair

Invite your siblings to also write on the plate – pass it around and use different colors of markers. Or maybe they can each decorate their own plate for dad!

What if you can’t find the words?

Look at Father’s Day cards for sentiments or even song lyrics from Dad’s favorite tunes. Not into words, a simple I LOVE YOU will do!

Supplies for these Father’s Day appreciation plates:

White ceramic or porcelain plates, washed and dried.

Permanent markers in desired colors – or paint and bake pens.

Alcohol wipes.

Oven, oven mitts

Directions:

markers

Find a clear table as a workspace for this craft. Cover the area with a vinyl tablecloth, and set out a plate for each person who will be doing this craft. Provide plenty of permanent markers or ceramic paint markers.

If you’re doing a design with a drawing or words, practice drawing the design first on a piece of paper.

Wipe the plate with the alcohol pad.

Plan out your name and placement.

After all this prep, you’re ready to pick up the pen and get to drawing. Go slowly and carefully to avoid any mistakes or smudges. If you do make a mistake, you can use a wet paper towel or alcohol pad to wipe off the mark.

For designs with multiple colors, start with your main color, and then add accent colors afterward. This will keep the colors from blurring together and looking messy. Allow the drawing on your mug to dry out for a few hours or overnight.

To solidify the drawing on these Father’s Day appreciation plates, you need to bake them. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid cracks in the ceramic by placing the plates in the oven before it heats up and leave in until it cools completely. If you’d like, you can bake the plates twice to ensure that the drawing really sets in.

Bake for 45 minutes.

Let the plates completely cool down before removing from the oven.

Remember to handwash these plates, as the drawings will rub off in the dishwasher. If you’re up for a little more of a crafty challenge, you can create fun designs on the rims of plain ceramic plates with chalkboard paint, dishwasher-safe glitter, or porcelain paints. No matter how you want to decorate your Father’s Day appreciation plates, remember to have fun and create a dish he’ll want to use for years to come.

These won’t last forever, it will eventually wash off if you use it a lot, but the good thing is you can always easily make another one!

ALTERNATIVES and TIPS:

Visit a local pottery painting shop and use underglazes for ceramics — your keepsake plate will last a lifetime. Use a fine-tip writer bottle for lettering.

Use a Cricut Maker or Cricut Joy to make these plates.

Or going in the other direction – you could use paper plates and write the phrases around the edges.

You can buy most of the supplies at the dollar store.

Rather than paint plates, you can paint a mug, or even a salad plate and create a whole set!

Use this idea for birthdays or any other celebrations. Even Thanksgiving, have everyone decorate a plate!

  1. What brand of pens are you using in the first picture (fistful of pens). They don’t look familiar, but colors are a darker tone, that what I am used to seeing. Thank you for your response, may your familia be safe and healthy!
