DIY beach towel tote

DIY beach towel tote – this is a project you’ll want to make several times because it is super easy and comes in handy for summer fun.

Beach towels are in season! Here’s a way to take one of those jumbo towels and transform it into a functional (and very cute) tote bag. This is a nice project for newbie sewers. If you are experienced, you can add lining, pockets, even appliques!

Supplies for a DIY beach towel tote:

40- by 70-inch beach towel with wide trim

Pinking shears

Sewing machine

Measuring tape

Sure! Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to turn a large beach towel into a tote bag, including using part of the towel for handles.

### Materials Needed:
– 1 large beach towel
– Scissors
– Sewing machine or needle and thread
– Pins
– Measuring tape
– Fabric chalk or pen

Measure and Cut the Main Body: Lay the towel flat and measure a rectangle about 22 inches wide and 36 inches long for the body of the tote. Cut out this rectangle.

Idea 1: If you use a towel that has wide trim, you can use those for handles, very simple!

Idea 2: Make the handles from the towel (as well as the bag!)

Cut the Handles: From the remaining towel material, use pinking shears and cut two strips each measuring about 4 inches wide and 28 inches long. These will be your handles.

Fold and Sew the Handles: Take one handle strip, fold it in half lengthwise with the right side (the side you want to show) facing out. Sew along the long edge, leaving the short ends open. Repeat for the other handle.

Turn the Handles Right Side Out: Turn the handles inside out to hide the seams. You can use a safety pin attached to one end to help pull it through.

Topstitch the Handles: For added durability, topstitch along both long edges of each handle about 1/4 inch from the edge.

There are several ways to make a beach towel tote. This one is sewn with one seam, and then stitched together along the bottom. This is an AI photo of my idea! I made one in a different method, see picture of that one below.

 Assembling the Tote Bag

Fold the Main Body: Fold the large rectangle in half with the right sides facing each other, so the fold becomes the bottom of your bag and the open edges are at the top.

Sew the Sides: Sew along the sides of the folded rectangle with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seams.

Attaching the Handles

Position the Handles: Turn the bag right side out. Position the handles on the top edge of the bag, about 5 inches in from each side. Pin them in place, ensuring the handles are not twisted.

Sew the Handles to the Bag: Sew each end of the handles to the bag, using a square stitch pattern for added strength. This means stitching a square around the end of each handle, and then sewing an ‘X’ inside the square.

Final Touches

Reinforce the Seams: For extra durability, you can reinforce the side seams by sewing another seam about 1/4 inch from the first seam on the inside of the bag.

Trim and Clean Up: Trim any excess threads and make sure all seams are secure.

And there you have it—a simple and practical beach towel tote bag with handles! Enjoy your new beach accessory.

Note: Use the excess towel to make another tote!
