Here’s a useful Father’s Day idea (or for anyone, any time!) : Hand painted leather coasters. This is an easy project because you can buy blank leather coasters and then use fabric paint to customize them.
DIY Hand painted leather coasters
This idea is for Father’s Day (hence the manly leather), but I really want to make these to sell. And aside from painting them there are other methods you can use to decorate. Like using branding with an heat embossing tool – or even oyur Cricut with permanent vinyl or an XTool and engrave them.

Leather coasters are classically stylish and durable choice for protecting your furniture from drink spills and condensation. They add a touch of sophistication to any setting.
I like leather or fabric coasters best because they actually absorb the liquid and are not slippery.

Supplies for DIY Hand painted leather coasters
Fabric paint or multi-surface paint
Paintbrushes
Painter’s tape or stencils
Step-by-Step Guide
Prepare Your Workspace: Lay down a plastic covering or poster board if you think you need it.
Clean the Coasters: Wipe the leather coasters with a damp cloth to remove any dust or oils. Let them dry completely before you start painting.
Plan Your Design: Decide on the design you want to create. You can draw inspiration from nature, abstract art, geometric patterns, or even personal symbols that have meaning to you. Sketch your design on paper first if it helps. You can lightly trace a design or just go for it!
Tape and/or Stencil: If you’re using painter’s tape or stencils, apply them to the coasters. This will help you achieve clean, crisp lines and more detailed designs.

Paint: Use thinner brushes for detailed work and broader brushes for larger areas. Be patient and apply the paint in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.
Add Details: Once the base layers are dry, you can add finer details and accents. Add dots, shading, stripes, etc.
– Outline your letters in black or white to make them pop
– Add little dots and dashes to fill up negative space.
– Use contrasting colors to add highlights.

Seal the Design: After the paint has completely dried, seal it to protect your design from wear and tear. This step is crucial as it ensures your artwork remains intact even after frequent use. If using fabric paint, it might already have sealer in it.
Let It Cure: Allow the coasters to cure for 24-48 hours before using them. This is so the paint and sealant will fully set.
Tips for Success

Don’t use regular craft paint! It will chip off. Make sure to use fabric paint or add a fabric medium to your craft paint. you can also use multi-surface paint.
Test on a Scrap Piece: If you’re new to fabric painting, practice on a scrap piece of leather first.
Let go of wanting perfection! Have fun and create, practice makes progress!
No leather? Use heavy canvas squares, sew them together and add gesso, then add your design. Stitch felt on the bottom so they will look finished.
I hope you love your DIY Hand painted leather coasters!
