I happen to be Mexican, but you can use these ideas to celebrate your own culture! It’s really about looking at traditional decorations and giving them a crafty twist themed to fall.

Visit your local Mexican import store to buy the goodies, then give them a crafty makeover!

Mexican tin heart in fall colors: Start with a tin heart and use enamel or glass paint to add a new layer of colors. Use browns, oranges, rust. You then glue some milagros around it.

Papel Picado Banners with Fall Colors: Cut out traditional papel picado designs with fall motifs like pumpkins, leaves, or flowers. String them together to create a festive banner.

Mexi-Style Pumpkin Painting: Paint pumpkins in bright, bold colors, use Mexican florals for inspiration. Add marigolds and greenery, and lots of pops of color. Use a white pumpkin instead of orange for a brighter look.

Milagro Mason Jar Candle Holders: Mix a bit of gold paint to some Mod Podge and coat the inside of Mason Jars. It will dry transparent. Then use permanent glue to affix assorted milagros. If you don’t want to use actual milagros, cut some out using an electronic cutting machine. Or you can even use paint pens to draw them on!

Corn Husk Flower Wreath: Soften the corn husks in water to soften. You can even dye them. Soak in various fall colors using food coloring. Once dry, shape them into flowers by folding and twisting the husks, securing them with floral wire. Attach the flowers to a wreath base to create a beautiful, rustic fall wreath.

Decoupage Tile Coasters: Use Latin-inspired collage sheets Cut to fit the tiles, apply Mod Podge to the tile, and carefully lay the tissue paper on top. Smooth out any bubbles and let it dry. Add a top coat of Mod Podge to seal. Attach felt pads to the bottom to protect surfaces. For a more permanent seal, use resin.

Lotería Card Garland: Use a punch on Lotería cards or use mini clothespins to attach them to a string. Hang the garland across a mantle, doorway or table.

Mexican-ribbon trimmed mat: Take an 11×14 mat that sits inside a frame and adorn it with ribbon, row after row. Use dry adhesive to make it stick. 

Talavera Gourd: Paint gourds using talavera-style motifs and patterns.

Papel Picado Candles: Cut tissue in fall colors and use a dry adhesive to wrap around a candle. You can also wrap with twine.

Barro rojo-inspired plates: Start with glass or clear plastic plates. Turn bottom side up and paint white polka dots around the rim, then a ring of green dots around each white dot. Let dry and add three coats of brown paint. Let dry and seal with varnish.
