Here is an easy busted canvas tutorial! It’s a fun trend going around and allows you to throw perfection to the wind (kinda) and create something fun and a bit messy.
While it looks a bit complicated, it’s actually really easy and will take about an hour.
Here is my video tutorial of busted canvas project!
Busted canvas tutorial:
SUPPLIES:

– 8×10 canvas (stretched on a frame)
– 8×10 canvas board
– Scrapbook paper or patterned gift tissue
– 5×7 image (or a napkin design to decoupage)
– Craft paint
– Paintbrushes
– Sandpaper (optional)
– Scissors or a craft knife
– Dry adhesive and hot glue
– Decoupage medium
– Embellishments (optional: fabric, paper, etc.)

How to make a bust canvas!
Base coat the canvas and canvas board that will show through the tears and distress marks. Let dry. I added a coat of decoupage medium and glitter to my canvas board, that’s optional!
Affix your image to the canvas board, you can use the dry adhesive (tape runner). Set aside.
Take the canvas, flip it over and carefully use the craft knife or scissors to make cuts from the center to the edges. It’s okay if it looks rough, it’s supposed to look busted, right?

Use sandpaper to gently rub areas of the canvas front to create a worn look. Focus on the edges and corners for a natural distressing effect.
Peel back the cut pieces. Curl them and hot glue them to the edge of the canvas around the tears to create more texture.
If you want to add layers, consider gluing fabric, paper, or other materials behind the tears, so they peek through the openings.
Add flowers, leave, etc on the front corners.

Other ideas for a busted canvas
Make these for a craft night. You can buy all the supplies from the dollar store.
Use 3×3 canvas and canvas boards to make mini-versions and give as gifts or party favors.
Create a patchwork effect by cutting the canvas into several pieces. Then, use colorful threads or embroidery floss to stitch the pieces back together in an abstract or patterned way. This gives the illusion that the canvas has been repaired, adding a unique texture and visual interest.
Substitute the canvas board for a shallow box then use resin to create a #D effect.
Assemble a shadow box within the busted canvas. Make it look like a pet is leaping out of it!
Paint a canvas and create a busted effect with cutouts or tears. Then, use glow-in-the-dark paint or materials to outline the “busted” areas or highlight certain sections of the canvas.
