Comic book greeting cards – Novela style!

Here is how to make Comic book greeting cards from Mexican novelas!

These novela notecards are such a blast to make and share all year round. You can find Mexican novela comics on amazon or in Mexican import or grocery stores. I like the PG ones as opposed to the Rate R or even XXX ones. Be careful, they can be really racy, lol!

You can use this same concept with any kind of comics!

To make them:

SUPPLIES:

Blank note cards

Dry adhesive, scrapbook paper, card stock, embellishments.

Images from the comic books (make color copies if you don’t want to use originals)

Pop dots

DIRECTIONS:

Line the front of the card with your choice of patterned paper, then use pop dots to “raise” the main image. Add embellishments.

Add dimensional paint for more texture.

About Mexican novelas:

Mexican romance comics, commonly referred to as “novelas” or “historietas románticas,” have a rich history and cultural significance in Mexico. Here are interesting tidbits!

Mexican romance comics gained popularity in the mid-20th century, particularly from the 1940s to the 1980s. They were inspired by American romance comics but quickly developed their own distinct style and themes.

Some of the major publishers of these comics included Editorial Argumentos (EDAR), which produced the famous “Lágrimas, Risas y Amor” series, and Editorial Vid, known for “El Libro Semanal.”

The stories in Mexican romance comics often revolved around love, heartbreak, jealousy, and social issues. They explored themes of forbidden love, class differences, and moral dilemmas, reflecting the cultural and social dynamics of the time.

The artwork in these comics was characterized by expressive characters, dramatic scenes, and detailed backgrounds. The illustrations were often black and white, with occasional use of color in special editions. My favorite are the covers, so bright and dramatic!

Mexican romance comics were more than just entertainment; they also served as a reflection of societal values and norms. They provided a platform for exploring complex emotions and relationships, often addressing issues like gender roles, family expectations, and personal sacrifice.

These comics were particularly popular among women, offering them a form of escapism and a way to navigate and understand their own romantic experiences. The strong emotional appeal and relatable characters made them a staple in many households.

More about novelas

The popularity of Mexican romance comics began to decline in the late 20th century with the advent of television and other forms of entertainment. However, they left a lasting legacy and continue to be remembered fondly by those who grew up reading them. And now for…CRAFTING!

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in preserving and studying these comics as important cultural artifacts. Collectors, researchers, and fans are working to digitize and archive these works to ensure their preservation for future generations.

Some of the most famous titles and characters from Mexican romance comics include “Rarotonga,” “Memín Pinguín,” and “El Pecado de Oyuki.” These stories and characters have become iconic in Mexican popular culture.

Beyond romance, these comics sometimes provided subtle social commentary, educating readers about various societal issues and encouraging reflection on personal and communal values.
