These stamped-metal affirmation pendants make great gifts!
This seems a bit intense at first, but I think it’s a great investment for a craft business. I started with supplies from Impress Arts:
Beginner’s Kit of metal stamping supplies
Pendant blanks (I love these pewter ones!)
Details of SUPPLIES (if you don’t get the kit):
- Metal Stamping Block
- Uppercase Newsprint Letter Set
- Metal-stamping Hammer
- Jump rings
- Stamping blanks
- Stamp Straight Tape
- Black paint
- Scrap cloth
Prepare Your Workspace
Set up a sturdy, flat workspace with your stamping block placed on a solid surface to prevent any movement when you are hammering.
Organize your metal stamps in the order you plan to use them, so you don’t lose track of your design.
Position Your Metal Blank
Use masking tape to secure the metal blank to the stamping block. The tape will help hold it in place and act as a guide to keep your text straight.
Mark the center of your design on the tape if you want to ensure your message is aligned.
Plan Your Design
Decide what word or phrase you want to stamp. It could be an affirmation like “Courage,” “Strength,” or “Believe.”
For a more decorative pendant, consider adding texture or stamping symbols along with the affirmation.
Stamping Your Affirmation
Place your first metal stamp firmly on the blank, positioning the letter where you want it. Hold the stamp upright and steady.
Strike the top of the stamp with a metal stamping hammer once with even pressure. It’s important to give one firm strike rather than multiple hits to avoid double impressions.
Repeat this process for each letter, carefully aligning them to form your desired word.
Darkening the Letters
Once your message is stamped, use a black enamel marker or stamp enamel to fill in the letters. This will make the letters stand out more.
Let the enamel dry for a few seconds, then wipe away the excess with a polishing cloth, leaving the color in the stamped impressions.
Finishing Touches
If you want to add texture or other design elements, use a texturing hammer or additional stamps.
Use a metal hole punch or drill to make a hole in the blank if it doesn’t already have one.
Attach a jump ring to the pendant and thread it onto a necklace chain or a cord.
Polishing and Sealing
Polish the pendant with a polishing cloth to give it a shiny finish.
Optional: You can seal the metal with a jewelry sealant to prevent tarnishing and keep the metal looking fresh.
Once you’re done, squirt some Puffy Paint and rub it into the grooves of the letters, then wipe away the paint with the scrap piece of cloth. Let dry, then rub away any leftover residue.
