Here is how to make a DIY New Year’s Eve flower crown. My inspiration came from the gorgeous flower crowns we make for Dia de Muertos or to celebrate Frida’s birthday. Except this time, we are ringing in the New Year!
Give this idea your own special twist!
DIY New Year’s Eve flower crown
To make this, think about the flower crowns you’ve made in the past. Traditionally we think of New Year’s Eve as elegant with lots of silver, gold, and sparkles.
But you know what? I’m not a gold and silver sparkly chica, I’m a crafty chica. Give me that over-the-top burst of color and handmade beauty. And by using the zip ties it is a metaphor for taking up space in the year to come. Might as well start at midnight!

Supplies:
Wood or chipboard numbers for the year
Gold spray paint (or you can buy gold zip ties, which I have linked above)
Assorted pompoms (small or medium, in complementary colors)
Mini acrylic stars or other embellishments (e.g., sequins, rhinestones)
Scissors
Optional: Glitter spray or fine gold glitter for extra sparkle
Directions for a DIY New Year’s Eve flower crown
Build the base

Attach zip ties to the headband. Space them evenly around the top, bending or arranging them to create an upward “bursting” effect reminiscent of celebratory fireworks. Mix short and long zip ties for a dynamic, layered look.
I first added all the long ones, and then added the medium length between the long ones, then added a small one between each zip tie. You can also use all the same size and trim to your liking.
If you start with black or white zip ties, take the zip-tie-covered headband to a well-ventilated area (preferably outside) and spray paint the entire structure gold. Apply multiple thin coats for an even finish, allowing each layer to dry fully. Don’t forget to spray the back side as well!
Create and attach Mexican Tissue Flowers

Cut tissue paper into squares or rectangles (about 6 inches). Layer 4-6 sheets, accordion-fold them, and secure the center with a small piece of floral wire or a thin zip tie. Round the edges with scissors, then gently separate the layers to create fluffy flowers. OR – you can buy or use paper or silk flowers.
Use a hot glue gun to attach the tissue flowers all around the headband, focusing on the front. Arrange them to cover the base of the zip ties and create a full, lush look. Add a generous amount of hot glue to make sure everything is sturdy!

Fill any gaps between flowers with pompoms, securing them with hot glue. Choose complementary colors to enhance the festive theme.
Add the numbers

Paint the numbers of the year, let dry. Hot glue them to bamboo skewers or small sticks and insert into the flower crown so they are prominent.
Add embellishments

Use white craft glue to attach mini acrylic stars to the tips of the zip ties and among the flowers. For extra sparkle, brush some glue onto the flowers or zip ties and sprinkle with fine glitter.
Finishing Touches

Once everything is dry, inspect the crown for any remaining gaps or loose pieces. Secure as needed with additional glue. For a polished look, spray a light coat of glitter spray over the entire crown (optional).

TIP: If you have a foam head, it makes the process so much easier!

Thanks to my daughter, Maya for modeling the crown! She loved it.
New Year’s Flower Crown – version Two

For a smaller version, use a ribbon headband and simple add double stick tape to add the numbers to the front.

Either way, it will look fabulous to rock in the new year!

Variations:
- Incorporate LED string lights for a glowing effect.
- Use glitter spray paint on everything, including the flowers
This design marries the festive energy of New Year’s Eve with the timeless charm of Frida-inspired florals, I plan to make one every year!
