Ugly Sweater Alternative: DIY Holiday Hoodie

Say hello to the DIY Holiday Hoodie – it’s an easy beloved Ugly Christmas Sweater alternative!

Ugly Sweater Alternative: DIY Holiday Hoodie

Transform an ordinary hoodie into a festive holiday masterpiece with this fun and easy DIY project. Perfect for holiday parties, family gatherings, or just spreading cheer in style! No sewing skills required—just creativity and a little hot glue or double-stick tape.

I love this idea because it is fast and easy and looks soooo over-the-top festive.

Supplies:

pink hoodie

  • Pre-washed hoodie: Any color; red, green, or white work great for the holidays. Look at the thrift stores or even a discount department store. I found thi spink one at Walmart for $10!
  • Hot glue or double-stick tape: Hot glue is easiest, but if you want to reuse the hoodie, then use extra-strong double stick tape.
  • A big bag of gift bows: Various sizes and colors. If you want, add in other plastic ornaments, bows, etc.
  • Battery-operated mini string lights (optional)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks (or double-stick tape for a temporary design)
  • Scissors

Instructions:

I LOVE this cordless glue gun from AdTech, I simply charged it at home before I left and turned it on while on set. So easy!

Prepare Your Workspace:

Lay your hoodie flat on a table or clean surface.

Arrange your materials nearby for easy access.

Design Your Layout:

Plan the placement of the gift bows, ornaments, and other decorations on the hoodie.

For a balanced look, start by focusing on the front of the hoodie. Add elements to the sleeves, hood, and back as desired.

Attach the Gift Bows:

Apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of each bow and press it firmly onto the hoodie. You don’t need to remove the adhesive backing from the bow. (For a temporary design, use double-stick tape instead.)

Space the bows evenly or cluster them in specific areas for a unique pattern. I made mine like a sash – going diagonal across the hoodie.

Tip: Use a mix of bow sizes and colors for a more dynamic look.

Add Ornaments:

Another idea: This is an ugly sweater I bought at Walmart, it already had the details, but I simply added more to make it my own!

Use hot glue to attach small plastic ornaments directly to the hoodie. Ensure they are lightweight to avoid sagging.

For extra security, you can thread ornaments onto a piece of ribbon and tie or glue the ribbon onto the hoodie.

Incorporate Tinsel or Ribbon:

Drape tinsel garland or holiday ribbon across the hoodie like garland on a tree.

Glue or tape the ends in place and add a few dots of glue along the length to secure it.

Optional: Add Lights!

Attach a string of battery-operated mini lights around the hoodie. Place the battery pack in the front pocket or secure it discreetly inside the hoodie.

Use small dabs of glue or tape to keep the lights in place.

Final Touches:

Check your design for any loose decorations and secure them.

Try on the hoodie to ensure it’s comfortable and that decorations aren’t obstructing movement.

Embellish a green wig to match your outfit!

I bought a green wig and my friend styled it for me for the holidays!

Care Tips:

  • For temporary designs, gently peel off decorations when finished.
  • For permanent designs, spot-clean only to avoid damaging the glue.

Now you’re ready to rock your festive holiday hoodie at any gathering! Whether you keep it simple with just bows or go all out with ornaments and lights, your DIY creation is sure to be a hit. 🎄✨

An even easier idea: Simply buy a pre-made Ugly Sweater and add your own details!
