Here is how to make record album bookends – these add a cool retro vibe to your bookcase or setting!
It’s a great way to recycle old unwanted albums that are scratched or otherwise unplayable.
DIY Record album bookends
Choosing the right records!
- Look for albums that are scratched, warped, or no longer playable. Avoid damaging records that are rare, valuable, or in pristine condition.
- Double-check to ensure you’re not using a rare or collectible record that could have value to a collector or music enthusiast.
- Choose records with titles or labels that align with your project. For example, use a holiday album for festive bookends or a romantic ballad album for a Valentine’s Day theme.
- Choose ones with cool labels. I love this one by Capitol Records!
- Standard vinyl records are typically sturdy enough to support books, but avoid thin, lightweight albums that might bend over time. If you want a sturdier bookends set, glue them to wood.

Supplies:
2 vinyl record albums (preferably ones you don’t mind repurposing)
Large pot of boiling water
Heat-resistant gloves or a towel
Metal ruler or flat-edged object for shaping
Baking sheet, parchment paper
Oven mitts
Spray paint or acrylic paint (optional, for customization)

Directions:
Select two records to transform into bookends. Choose albums with bold, interesting labels for a fun look, or plain ones if you plan to paint them. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
Boil water in a large pot or kettle. Alternatively, preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C).
If using boiling water: Wearing the oven mitts, place the vinyl record over the opening of the pot so the steam softens it. Rotate it to heat evenly.
If using the oven: Place the record on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and heat it for 3-5 minutes until it becomes pliable.
Once softened, remove the record using heat-resistant gloves or a towel to avoid burns.
Shape it
Quickly bend the record into an L-shape. To do this, fold about 4-5 inches of the record at a 90-degree angle, creating a base that will support your books.
Use a ruler or flat object to press and sharpen the edges while it cools for a neat, clean look.
Cool and Set
Hold the record in place until it hardens, which should only take a minute or two. If it starts to cool too quickly and becomes stiff before you finish shaping, reheat it and try again.
Repeat the process for the second record to complete your set.
Embellish!
Paint the records using spray paint or acrylics to match your décor.
You can also add stickers, decoupage, or embellishments for a personalized touch.
I used white craft glue and added little stars all over.
Tips:
- Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes from the softened vinyl.
- If you’re a beginner, start with a practice record to get the hang of shaping.
- For a sturdier base, glue a small piece of felt or rubber to the bottom of the record to prevent slipping.
Enjoy your retro-inspired DIY bookends!
