Make a shadow box from magazines

Make a shadow box from magazines! This is a great way to use up old magazines and create art. A great craft for kids, workshops or parties!

I’m a sucker for magazines. It’s hard to throw them away.

The other day I finished reading a magazine and instead of tossing it in the recycling bin, I made crafts from it!

Make a shadow box from magazines

SUPPLIES:

Magazine page

White craft glue

Hot glue

Scissors

Directions:

wrapping paper or magazine rolled strips
These were made from wrapping paper which has the same texture as magazines. Use whatever you have!

Cut stacks of paper strips into 1×3″ strips.

Start at one corner of each strip and roll it.

Once you have about 30 rolled pieces, snip them to the same size.

Glue rolled pieces together to make the two sides of your box, then the back of your box.

Use other pieces to add embellishments.

Other ideas for this project:

Color-themed shadowbox

Instead of using random magazine pages, curate colors that fit a theme (e.g., all blues and greens for a calming effect, or reds and oranges for a vibrant look).

Arrange the rolled pages in an ombré pattern for a gradient effect.

Shadowbox with hidden words

Before rolling the magazine pages, highlight or cut out words and phrases that are meaningful.

Once rolled, the words will peek through in unexpected ways, making the piece a conversation starter.

Shadowbox with a central image or object

Instead of leaving the shadowbox empty in the center, add a meaningful object, a mini collage, or even a small painted canvas.

The rolled magazine pages will frame the central piece beautifully.

Metallic or painted shadowbox

After rolling and assembling the magazine pages, spray paint them with metallic colors like gold, silver, or bronze for a chic, modern look.

You could also dry-brush acrylic paint over the edges to add texture and dimension.

Layered 3D shadowbox

Create multiple layers of rolled pages at different heights to give the piece more depth.

You can arrange them in a radial pattern, like sunrays, or in concentric rectangles for a more structured design.
