Ceramics: 5 ways to make clay slabs without a slab roller

How to make clay slabs without a slab roller – for both fired ceramics and air-dry clay projects.

If you love hand-built ceramics but don’t have access to a large professional slab roller, don’t worry. There are plenty of simple methods to create even, consistent clay slabs using everyday tools. These are all methods I used before I bought my industrial slab roller.

I am a self-taught ceramicist, so all my ceramic tutorials for are people like me who want to learn at their own pace at home, but need to know the basics. If you really want to get down to details, take a ceramics class at a local arts center or ceramic studio! Plus – there are soooo many videos online for every specific question. Trust me, I’ve watched them all!

NOTE: I produce my hand built ceramics in batches and it was worth the investment for me to buy. BUT before then, I used these other methods and they came in handy. Eventually I realized it was taking too much time, so I leveled up my game and I bought this glorious machine!

It is so sturdy, it also serves as my shipping prep table in between my ceramic production.

5 ways to make clay slabs without a slab roller

Whether you’re crafting plates, tiles or sculptural pieces, these techniques will help you achieve great results.

clay
There are a few great work-arounds when it comes to making clay slabs without a huge slab roller.

TIPS:

  • Work on a steady flat surface.
  • Work on top of a clean pottery canvas or heavy paper.
  • Store your slabs in a covered bin, separated by plastic sheets (I use cut up grocery bags) or moist towels)
  • Have a spray bottle on hand to moisten the clay.
  • Make sure your clay is wedged and ready for slabbing!
  • Have a cup of water for smoothing.
  • Use a nib as well for smoothing.

Rolling pin method

This is tried and true, one I still use for quick projects. You’ll need two sticks (flat rulers, measuring sticks, etc.)

  • Prepare your workspace: Use a smooth surface such as a canvas-covered board, silicone mat or wooden table lightly dusted with cornstarch or clay-friendly release agents.
  • Roll evenly: Start from the center and roll outward in all directions. Rotate the clay frequently to maintain even thickness.
  • Use guide sticks: Place two wooden dowels, rulers or yardsticks of equal thickness on either side of your clay to ensure a consistent slab thickness.
  • Flip the slab: To prevent sticking, gently lift and flip the slab a few times while rolling.

Slap and stretch method

For a more organic approach, you can manually stretch and flatten the clay by hand. This method gives a very organic look.  Here a video to help see how it works:

  • Begin with a ball of clay and press it down into a thick pancake shape.
  • Gently lift and stretch the clay using your hands, pulling outward from the edges.
  • Use gravity to assist by draping the slab over a curved surface or lifting and letting it stretch naturally.
  • Tap and compress with a wooden paddle or flat board to even out the thickness.

Hand-pressing with a bat or board

This method is excellent for quick, uniform slabs:

    • Flatten the clay slightly with your hands.
    • Place a flat, rigid board such as a wooden bat over the clay.
    • Press down firmly to evenly distribute the clay.

Flip and repeat as necessary to ensure uniformity.

Eyeball it!

You know what? If you don’t have any of these tools, just create! In my early days, I was so excited, I didn’t wait for any tools, I just went for it. Keep a ruler near by, I like to roll my clay slabs to about 1/4″ thick -considering it will shrink.

Here is how my plates looked after using the eyeball method, LOL. I was really happy with them and I sold them all!

Use a mini-roller

If you are making small items like jewelry, you can use this handy tool. It comes in handy for so many projects and different thickness of rails to use.

This is a great tool for the craft room in general! So many uses!

Try a pasta machine for small slabs

If you’re working with smaller projects, a dedicated pasta machine can be a great alternative to a slab roller:

  • Cut clay into manageable pieces that fit into the pasta machine.
  • Start at the thickest setting and gradually reduce the thickness.
  • Feed the clay through multiple times, adjusting the thickness as needed.
  • Clean the machine regularly to prevent clay buildup.

Table top slab roller

This is what I graduated to after the sticks – I bought this table top slab roller. It certainly came in handy! Perfect for the clay hobbiest or if you teach classes away from your studio. This is good for making one mug at a time or a batch of ornaments or small ring dishes. It is sturdy and gets the job done.

Finishing touches

After rolling out your slabs, remember to:

  • Compress the clay with a rib or smooth tool to reduce warping and cracking.
  • Dry slabs slowly and evenly by covering them loosely with plastic to prevent cracking.
  • Smooth edges and surfaces with a sponge or soft rib for a polished look.

With these methods, you can create beautiful hand-built ceramic pieces without a huge professional slab roller. Happy creating!
