Fabric pen embroidery: Here are five ways to add depth and detail to your stitches!
Fabric pen embroidery ideas
Using fabric markers in an embroidery project can add depth, color, and creative flair without extra stitching. Here are some fun ways to incorporate them into your designs.
NOTE: I used AI to create images of my ideas (except the floral one) because I didn’t have time to make them all. But I plan to!
SUPPLIES:
Cotton fabric
Spray bottle of water (optional)
Fabric pens or fabric markers – You’ll want a set of these because they are formulated to work on fabric, however – you can use any markers you have on hand. This set is my favorite for this kind of project because the pens are dual-tip – a brush marker on one side and a fine tip on the other.
Directions:
Pre-wash the fabric and place in hoop.
You can color the background first and then add embroidery or vice versa, your choice. The ideas below will guide you.
Five ideas, let’s get into it!
Create a shaded background: Use fabric markers to lightly color the fabric before stitching. This technique works well for ombre effects, watercolor-style backgrounds, or adding dimension to floral designs. The embroidery stitches can then highlight and define the artwork.
Watercolor effect: Color a portion of the fabric and then use the spray bottle mist on it to give it a watercolor look. wait until it is dry to continue.
Outline and fill with thread: Sketch a design with a fabric marker and then use embroidery stitches to outline or accentuate specific areas. This method is perfect for intricate lettering or detailed illustrations, allowing the fabric marker to fill in spaces while the thread adds texture.

Blended effects for depth: Combine fabric markers and embroidery thread to create depth and shading in a design. For example, a flower’s petals can be lightly shaded with markers, and thread can be used to define edges or add highlights, making the design pop.

Handwritten or lettered embroidery
Write a favorite quote, name, or meaningful word with a fabric marker, then stitch around it or embellish it with decorative stitches. This is an excellent technique for personalizing gifts or creating meaningful artwork without having to stitch every letter.

Mixed media art on fabric
Incorporate fabric markers alongside embroidery to create mixed-media artwork on fabric. Use the markers to add painted elements, shadows, or textures, and then stitch over selected areas for a layered, dimensional effect. This technique works beautifully for abstract art, portraits, and whimsical designs.
Portrait embroidery: Use tracing paper to add the outline of a person, then color the background and embroider the portrait.
