My left-handed granny square blanket adventure – Pt 1

Helllooo, join me on my left-handed granny square blanket adventure!

My goal is perfection, like this granny square! Photo credit: Ls9907

Every so often I become OBSESSED with a craft. Last mont it was the sticker doodles craft, and now…it’s granny squares.

Granny squares are such a timeless and popular look. Once you master the method, you can make these for everything from sweaters and blankets to purses and pillows.

In a quest to downsize my craft supplies, I couldn’t part with my yarn. I’m talking two huge bins of all my favorite colors and textures. Rather than donate, I decided to make a granny square blanket.

This is just some of my yarn stash!

The problem? I didn’t know how to make a granny square.

Yes, I’m an avid crocheter (freestyle, I’m mentally allergic to patterns). Normally I stick to make these yarn collage scarves. I use double stitch and let the yarn provide the magic. It’s very therapeutic and relaxing to me to sit and crochet rows of pretty yarn.

However, we all know life is abut learning and growing – so I vowed to tackle something new.

This is one of my Crafty Chica crochet scarves I love to make.

I visited my friend Christina and within an hour, I became a pro at whipping out granny squares.

So I thought.

I came home and completely forgot how to level up around the corners. Frustration overload. My goal with all my learning-curve crafts is to push through. So I just kept crocheting granny squares until it felt right.

TIP: Find a video that you can connect with and rewatch until you get the hang of the process.

Hyper-focused! No one talk to me!

Are they wonky? I lil bit. But now I’m at the stage where I’m adding the trim around each one so I can stitch them together. I’ll have a separate post for that!

For now, if you are left-handed, here is how to make a granny square. I also found a helpful video!

I would make my own video, but I’m scared my process isn’t quite refined yet…stay tuned, I’ll get there!

How to make left-handed granny squares

Note: Chunky yarn is my jam. I use a size N hook and thick yarn. It makes every goes faster and easier. And it fits my personality. If I have thinner yarn, I’ll double up two skeins. It works and it looks cool!

Supplies:

  • Size N (10 mm) crochet hook
  • Bulky yarn or multiple strands of worsted-weight yarn
  • Scissors

One square at a time!

Step 1: Make a Chain Loop

Chain 5 and join into a ring with a slip stitch into the first chain.

Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).

Step 2: Row 1

Work 2 more double crochets into the ring (this forms your first granny cluster of 3 double crochets).

Chain 2 (corner space).

Work 3 double crochets into the ring.

Chain 2.

Repeat steps 3 & 4 two more times to form four sets of 3 double crochets.

Join with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain-3.

Changing colors – I found this helpful video!

Step 3: Row 2

Attach new yarn in any corner space.

Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).

Work 2 double crochets in the same corner space.

Chain 2 (corner space).

Work 3 more double crochets into the same corner space.

In the next corner space, work:

3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets.

Repeat Step 6 in the remaining two corner spaces.

Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain-3.

Step 4: Row 3 – Double Crochet Border for Joining

Attach new yarn in any corner space.

Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).

Work 2 more double crochets in the same space.

Chain 2, then work 3 more double crochets into the same corner space.

Double crochet in each stitch across until you reach the next corner.

In the corner spaces, work:

3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets.

Continue double crocheting in each stitch around until all sides are done.

I’m going to finish, I promise!

Where I’m at

I made 80 squares so far and am working on the borders. I’ll post a tutorial when I get to the next step of joining them together.

Oh! I’m also using a blocking board to make all my squares uniform in shape, that will be a separate post as well.
