How to make layered resin glitter magnets

Supplies:

Silicone cube tray/mold

Two-part resin

Assorted colors of micro glitter

Small objects to embed

Adhesive for glueing magnets on back, and magnets.

Here’s my video tutorial for these layered resin magnets!

Directions:

Start by preparing your workspace with a silicone mat or wax paper, gloves, and protective covering for surfaces. Make sure your ice cube tray mold is clean and dry.

Mix a small amount of two-part resin according to the package directions, stirring slowly to avoid bubbles.

Pour a thin layer into each cavity of the tray—just enough to coat the bottom. This will be the front of your magnet, so make sure it is free of bubbles.

Pour a thin layer in the mold.

Allow this first layer to rest for 10 to 15 minutes so bubbles can rise and pop. You can use a heat gun or a lighter briefly over the surface to help release bubbles. You can even use a straw to blow them out.

Fill with items. Once the first layer is slightly set but still tacky, place your small items face down into each mold cavity. These could be tiny photos, stickers, confetti, or mini charms. Make sure they are positioned exactly how you want them to appear from the front of the magnet.

Add items face down after first layer of resin has set for 15 minutes.

Mix a second batch of resin and add different colors of fine or chunky glitter. Pour this glittered resin over the embedded items until the mold is about three-quarters full.

Let this layer cure for at least four hours or according to your resin brand’s instructions.

Finish it up

Add a third layer to fully seal in the glitter and give extra dimension, mix a final clear batch of resin and fill each mold to the top. This gives a domed, glassy look.

Let the entire project cure for 24 hours. Once fully hardened, pop out each square and glue a magnet to the back using strong adhesive.

I love using resin, I like to incorporate all kinds of tiny objects to embed, and then top it all off with glitter! I use silicone molds for a lot of my resin projects, the pieces peel out nicely every time.

Tips

layered resin magnets

If the front has a cloudy look on your finished piece, hit it(the cured resin pieces) with a coat of spray varnish (high gloss)  and it will become ultra shiny and brilliant!

Use sandpaper to smooth the edges on the back of the resin piece, coat with shiny gloss varnish.
