These DIY hammered heart earrings will make you addicted to working with silver. They help you take out your agressions and you end up with a sweet set of corazones!
I was nervous at first to try these but then I just went for it and loved the process. Next up – hoops!
YES! It took a couple tries, especially because I thought I’d be fancy and make jumbo hearts.
I had a fail because I put the earring hook and the loop on the wrong sides at first, but I scrapped that pair and tried again. That’s the best part about buying a huge spool of wire – it gives you a lot of room for practice!
Supplies for DIY Hammered heart earrings:
-16-gauge silver wire (for a sturdy but malleable base)
– Jeweler’s hammer
– Steel block or anvil for hammering
– Round-nose pliers
– Flat-nose pliers
– Wire cutters
– Sandpaper or a metal file
Directions:
Cut the Wire
– Cut two pieces of 16-gauge silver wire, each measuring approximately 10 inches. This will allow enough length for shaping the heart and creating a secure closure.
Shape the Heart
– Find the midpoint of each wire piece and use round-nose pliers to create the top arch of the heart.
– With your hands and the pliers, shape each side of the wire into the bottom curves of the heart, bringing the ends together at the top to form a heart hoop shape. The ends should almost touch but overlap slightly to create a closure system.
Create the Closure
– On one end of the wire, use round-nose pliers to make a small loop. This loop will act as the closure hook.
– On the other end of the wire, use your flat-nose pliers to bend the tip slightly inward, forming a small, open hook that the loop will latch onto. Adjust as needed to make sure the hook and loop fit securely.
Hammer the Heart Shape
– Place one heart on the steel block or anvil.
– Use the jeweler’s hammer to gently flatten and texture the wire. Be sure to hammer evenly, creating a uniform hammered texture while maintaining the heart shape.
– Repeat with the second heart hoop, ensuring both earrings have a similar hammered effect.
Smooth the Ends
– Use sandpaper or a metal file to smooth any sharp or rough edges, especially around the closure loop and hook.
Test the Closure
– Close each earring by latching the loop into the hook. Adjust the shape and closure as needed to ensure the earrings are secure and symmetrical.
