I can’t wait to share this mole popcorn recipe! I bought a jar of powdered mole last weekend and learned this creative way to use it: toss it over popcorn! The mole company is called Mano y Metate and they are based in Tucson, AZ.
I had a pop-up shop event at a local boutique, Galeana39 and at the end of the day, I went up to the counter to pay for the things I wanted to buy, and Curtis, the owner of the shop told me about the popcorn recipe. I couldn’t wait to give it a try!
I Googled and found the original recipe, I decided to film a video showing the process. Here’s the link if you can see it below. This was one of those recipes that I knew I’d like. I didn’t even try it before I filmed the video. It looked easy enough.
Make your popcorn as usual. We don’t have a microwave or air pop machine, so I make our popcorn on the stove top. Set it aside.
NOTE: You can even buy a bag of popped corn to save even more time in making this mole popcorn recipe!
Heat up about 3-4 tablespoons of cooking oil (or olive oil). Mix in the jar of powdered mole. Stir with a spoon, over and over until the mole breaks down.
Saute until it’s creamy. Then, with the popcorn in a big bowl, spoon it over and toss. Keep adding mole until you reached your desired taste. We used the whole amount. I added lemon and lime, but you can also add salt, maybe even a little bit of sugar.
So how does this mole popcorn recipe taste? It’s spicy with a tinge of sweetness. Definitely enjoyable and guest-worthy. It’s a great southwestern snack that will get people chatting. I think it would go nice with a mojito or even a Margarita.
