DIY pompom sweater

You’ll never believe what inspired this DIY pompom sweater project. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+!

Okay, if you are having trouble connecting the dots, I’ll explain.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

After a busy day of filling orders from our online store, I decided to call it a day and relax and watch TV. My husband suggested this holiday feature and at first, I was like, “Eh, I’m not really into it.” But I gave it a try and OMG, it is such a cute holiday special!

It clocks in at an easy 44 minutes, but there is a lot to keep the plot moving fast and entertaining.

The premise is Peter (Chris Pratt) is missing Christmas, and Mantis commits to delivering the magic by way of kidnapping one of Peter’s all-time heroes – Kevin Bacon!. We won’t go into much more than that, but I will say mayhem commences as do a Santa’s bagful of hysterical and super cute misunderstandings. And you’ll recognize a lot of the voices and cast members!

This is one of my favorite holiday features, give it a watch and I bet you’ll agree.

About the pompom sweater

Mantis (played by Pom Klementieff) teams up with Drax the Destroyer to visit Earth (in search of Peter’s gift) and end up with mucho goodies from a Christmas shop. It was at this scene where I gasped. Mantis sports a fluffy green sweater donned with colorful pompoms.

Her version is a cropped sweater with medium-sized pompoms.

I had just purchased this sweater from Target and knew it was meant to be.

Supplies for a DIY pompom sweater

Sweater (pre-wash if brand new)

Pompoms

Fabric glue

What is the difference between fabric glue and regular glue?

Always use fabric glue if you plan to wash your clothing craft.

You certainly want to use fabric glue for this project if you plan to wash your sweater. Regular white craft glue, like school glue, will work with fabric – but it is water-based.

Water-based glue will dissolve when it comes in contact with water. Whereas fabric glue has an acrylic bonding agent that holds up to water.

Directions for a DIY pompom sweater

If your sweater is new, pre-wash it to remove the sizing, hang dry. This will help the glue adhere better, especially if you plan to wash your sweater.

Work on a flat surface. Lay your sweater face up and use your fingers to smooth out any wrinkles or bumps.

Add the glue

You are going to add dots of fabric glue like a five dots on dice. This will give you an even layout of the pompoms.

Do not try to apply them randomly, trust me! This method is very pleasing to the eye once your project is finished.

Start with a two-three rows at the top. Notice the dice pattern?

You can also add a row at the top seam of the sweater.

Only work a few rows at a time, otherwise it increases the chances of smears or the glue drying.

Add the pompoms

You can use all one color, but I love the look of different colors. They remind me of Christmas lights! The pompoms I used had red, green, yellow, blue, purple, orange, yellow, white, brown, and black. I chose them with intention so they looked random, if that makes sense!

Place a pompom on each dot of glue and press into place. The glue will dry clear.

Repeat this entire process of the glue and the pompoms.

Avoid these areas

I wouldn’t put the pompoms on the under arm area, they might feel uncomfortable or even rub off.

And maybe none around the bottom if you like to tug on your sweater. Otherwise everywhere else is fair game.

Let dry for several hours and then repeat the entire process. You can’t go without doing the back of your sweater!

Let dry for several hours, and then you are good to go!

I did the front side before I went ot bed, and then the back side first thing the next morning. My sweater was dry and ready to wear by lunchtime!

I love it, it came out so festive, but not in the ugly sweater category. I can wear it with black slacks or a skirt, even with jeans. You can do this technique on a jeans jackets or even a flannel shirt. a friend of mine glued pompoms to her stockings!
