You’ll love these Terracotta pots decorating ideas + terracotta crafts – and barro rojo DIYS.
Barro rojo is the beautiful color red clay pottery. All of these projects celebrate this earthy, beloved hue. And you’ll also get some tips for using terra cotta flower pots too!
Whether you’re a pro crafter or just starting out, these projects are a great way to add a touch of creativity to your home. There are two ways to approach these projects:
- Buy terracotta pieces and paint them
- Use terracotta air dry clay and create your own designs.
- Buy or make terracotta paint color.
Here is my tutorial to mix your own barro rojo (terracotta) paint color.
If you don’t have a kiln or access to one, I recommend using air-dry clay for the non-fired clay projects below. However, if you are making a useable item like a mug, cup, pot, bowl, cup, or vase, you need to use terracotta clay, or it won’t be useable.
Terracotta Pots Decorating Ideas & Terracotta Crafts
Painted Plant Pots
Transform plain terracotta pots into vibrant and eye-catching planters by painting them with bright colors and patterns. You can use craft paint or use glazes and fire them in a kiln.
Barro Rojo Trees
Use terra cotta paint to transform trees into beautiful holiday decorations.
Textured Terra Cotta Planters
Make your garden stand out! Paint and texturize ordinary, boring terra cotta pot planters to make your garden memorable! You can use the same technique for boxes!
You can decorate the pots by using small cookie cutters and stamps to use on the air dry clay you will be putting onto your plain terra cotta pots, a toothpick (to make designs in the clay), paint, and more!
Terra Cotta Patio Lights
This is a winner! Rework some small terra planters into a string of patio lights!
Air-Dry Clay Ornaments
Get hands-on with terracotta clay to create unique and stylish ornaments. Use the same concept to make jewelry! I use Crayola Air-Dry Clay.
Barro Rojo Ring Dishes
Use air-dry red clay and plastic salsa bowls to create beautiful ring dishes that can be used for a variety of ways.
Faux-Aged Gold Leaf Pots
To make faux-aged gold leaf pots, you will need terracotta pots (any size), Gold leaf (found at craft stores), adhesive (or decoupage medium), and two wide brushes.

Paint-Pour Flower Pots
These paint-pour flower pots are an easy diy project and a fun way to add a lot of color to your garden area. This is an easy painting style because all you do is dip the bottom of the pot in paint (OR you can do it from the top of the pot), and then quickly turn it over so that the paint can drip down the sides of the pot. SO EASY! And they turn out really cool looking! There are so many creative ways to paint these.
Terracotta Dangle Earrings
